Rivers have long held significance to the creation and adaption of civilizations across the world, and the Euphrates River is no different. 

The Euphrates River, the longest river in southwest Asia, spans 1,740 miles (2,800 km) and is one of the two main rivers in the Tigris-Euphrates river system.

Geography

The Euphrates River finds its source in the Armenian Highlands in the Turkish mountains, slightly upstream from the town of Keban, where the Murat and Karasu Rivers meet.

The main stem of the River is 1,730 miles (2,781 kilometers) long, from the point that its two source rivers meet to its confluence with the Tigris River.

That said, the Karasu (Western Euphrates) finds its source 280 miles upstream, and the Murat (Eastern Euphrates) approximately 400 miles upstream, which leaves the longest course of the Euphrates to be approximately 3,000 miles from its headwaters to its endpoint.

From its source in Turkey, the Euphrates follows a course that takes the river on a journey south through the mountains of Turkey, across Syria, and through Iraq, where it joins with the Tigris River and eventually empties into the Persian Gulf.

The Tigris-Euphrates River basin covers an area of about 13,700 square miles, spanning through diverse landscapes including rugged mountains, wetlands, marshes, and fertile floodplains, which provided essential resources for early human life, giving the area the name of “Cradle of Civilization.”

Physical Features

Along its journey, the Euphrates sees inflow from several small tributaries, some of which include the Balikh and Khabur rivers. It should be noted, though, that the majority of the river’s inflow comes from tributaries near the north of the river in Turkey.

These tributaries carry sediments that nourish the floodplain, supporting agriculture and the wider ecology of the area as it runs through several iconic landscapes that include wetlands, rapids and waterfalls, deep valleys, a delta and estuary near its end, and human-made dams and reservoirs to capture fresh water and generate power.

Less than 30% of the Euphrates drainage basin is in Turkey, but it receives approximately 94% of its water within the Turkish highlands.

The river sees its highest inflow of water during spring when melted snow from the Turkish mountains makes its way into the river system. However, the construction of the aforementioned dams, such as the Atatürk Dam in Turkey and the Tabqa Dam in Syria, has significantly impacted the flow of the river, limiting its availability further downstream.

The Mesopotamian Marshes are one of the largest wetland systems in the Middle East and provide crucial habitats for migratory birds, fish species, and other wildlife.

Some of the common wildlife that makes its home in and around the Euphrates River include:

  • Migratory Birds: Herons, storks, pelicans, flamingos, and waterfowl

The Euphrates River faces significant pollution challenges, primarily from heavy metals, which are harmful due to their persistence, biological toxicity, resistance to degradation, and their ability to infiltrate the food chain. These pollutants accumulate in water bodies, soil, and silt when released into the environment. Under certain conditions, heavy metal pollutants can react with organic substances, forming even more toxic metal-organic complex compounds.

Heavy metals (HMs) are absorbed into the subcutaneous layers of aquatic animals and enter organisms through osmotic exchanges between the metals and the surfaces of the affected aquatic organisms. This process exacerbates the problem as these toxins are integrated into the organisms’ systems.

Since water bodies are interconnected, heavy metals can easily enter aquatic life through three primary pathways:

  1. Direct Absorption: Aquatic organisms take in dissolved heavy metal particles from the water through their gills and other organs. These metals accumulate on their skin or are transmitted via the bloodstream to various tissues within their bodies.
  2. Ingestion: Aquatic creatures absorb heavy metals through their digestive systems when consuming contaminated food sources.
